Long before the American settlers ventured in to this region looking for gold, Dawson City was an important harvest area used by the First Nations Peoples, with a fishing camp perched at the confluence of the Klondike and Yukon Rivers. Over the course of three years the Klondike gold rush turned the peaceful encampment in to a lively town of over 40,000 people, however this quickly diminished as the prospectors departed. Today the city retains it’s historical, and slightly renegade feel, with dirt streets, old boardwalks and timeless wooden buildings which make you feel like you have accidentally stepped back in to the 1890’s. Many artists have chosen to settle here, taking inspiration from its remoteness and the magnificent Yukon scenery and so despite its relatively small size Dawson City is full of quirky, cultural vitality.
