Gros Morne is an impressive National Park situated on the western coast of Newfoundland. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is of enormous value both in terms of natural beauty and geological history. The Tablelands here are made from rock that has come deep from within the earth’s crust and been pushed to the surface by the clashing of two continents. Over millions of year the resulting mountains have been eroded to create a fascinating, flat-topped landscape, punctuated by gorges and high-level ‘ponds’ to create a magnificent landscape. There are many well-mapped walking trails here and a number of small settlements along the coastline making it extremely easy to lose yourself here for a few days.
