Cavendish is the home town of Lucy Maud Montgomery and it is near here that you will find her cousin’s farm which inspired her most famous book. The ‘House of Green Gables’, otherwise known as Green Gables Heritage Centre, offers guided or self-guided tours around the site, with various exhibits and audio-visual displays offering information about the heritage of the area and the significance of the book. There are also pleasant walking trails around the nearby ‘Haunted Woods’ and ‘Balsam Hollow’ giving visitors a further glimpse in to the author’s childhood and the places that provided a backdrop to Anne’s adventures. For fans of the book this is a must-do, but even if you are not you may find yourself strangely enchanted by the little flamed-haired character and the landscapes that defined her.
