The Discovery Passage is a great place to enjoy some outdoor activities, with Campbell River being the jumping off point for a variety of wildlife trips. Whales are best spotted from mid-July to the end of August whilst grizzly bears are found in much higher numbers from late August to late October when they are hunting for the spawning salmon in the rivers. However, there is some wildlife and certainly a great range of birdlife to be seen all through summer and a day out on the water is well spent, even if just to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Fishing is also a popular pastime here, and in particular the area is known for its excellent salmon fishing, again best during the summer months. You are required to fish with a licensed guide but this can be organised locally quite easily.

Just across the water from Campbell River is Quadra Island where there are a variety of adventure activities to be enjoyed. There are numerous scenic walking trails such as Rebecca Spit where you can wander along driftwood strewn beaches or Chinese Mountains where you can hike up to an impressive viewpoint. Many of these trails can also be used with mountain bikes. The surrounding islets and inlets provide lovely sheltered waters and so this is also an excellent place to go kayaking and enjoy the fabulous seascapes whilst, of course, doing a bit more wildlife spotting.
